The microbiome seeding that happens at birth — and what changes when it doesn’t.
The Beginning
In the first hours of life, something happens that nobody tells you about.
During a vaginal delivery, the infant passes through a canal lined with specific bacterial species — Lactobacillus reuteri, Lactobacillus crispatus, Bifidobacterium infantis among them. This is not incidental. This is seeding. The first colonisation of a gut that will, for the rest of that person’s life, be the primary site of immune regulation.
These species do specific things. They calibrate regulatory T-cells — the cells that prevent the immune system from overreacting to harmless substances. They establish the gut barrier. They set an inflammation threshold that will influence reactivity for years, possibly decades. All of this begins in the first minutes and hours of life.

The Difference
C-section delivery bypasses the vaginal canal entirely. The infant’s first microbial exposure comes instead from hospital air, surfaces, and skin — a very different starting library. Not inferior in every dimension. Different in ways that matter for immune calibration.
This is not a verdict on how you were born or how you were fed. It is the beginning of understanding why the immune system responded the way it did.

The Turn
The microbiome is adaptable at any age. Not identical to what it would have been — but meaningfully different from where it is now. Every intervention that supports gut diversity adds to the library: diverse plant fibre, reduced ultra-processed food, consistent sleep timing, stress regulation. These are not small changes. They are the conditions under which the library grows.
Research by Kalliomäki et al. (2001, The Lancet) showed that supplementation with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG in infancy reduced eczema incidence by approximately 50% at two years. The implication: specific species, introduced at the right time, shift the immune trajectory. The adult equivalent is less dramatic but real — the library responds to what you give it.
The 14-day protocol is the first step. Reduce what degrades the library. Introduce what rebuilds it. Watch what changes. Then keep going.
What was seeded imperfectly can be rebuilt. Not identically. But meaningfully.
